What Is the Average Age for Men and Women Who Divorce?

In 2020, the median age at first divorce was 42.6 for men and 40.1 for women (Bowling Green State University).[1]

The median age varies by demographics:

  • Among racial and ethnic groups, Black men had the oldest median age at first divorce at 45.9, while native-born Hispanic men had the youngest at 37.5 (Bowling Green State University)
  • For women, Asian women had the oldest median age at 44.6, while native-born Hispanic women had the youngest at 38.0 (Id.)
  • Those with graduate or professional degrees had the oldest median ages at first divorce: 44.5 for men and 42.5 for women (Id.)

Regarding who initiates divorce:

Wives initiate divorce significantly more often than husbands.
