One of the most asked questions about divorce (and biggest source of friction between divorce lawyers and their clients) is how you manage your divorce case while working a full-time job and juggling the responsibilities of life. Unfortunately, but not surprisingly, court deadlines are not tailored to you or your schedule. No use complaining about it. It’s that way for everybody. Put on you big kid pants and manage. Poor time and effort management can ruin your case. You could hire a team of professionals to handle virtually every aspect of your divorce for you, but even then, your participation and cooperation will be needed—some things only you know and can do. You could choose to try to handle every aspect of your divorce by yourself. Or you could choose a course somewhere in between. Where the answer to your specific situation lies really depends on how much money and time you are willing to spend on your divorce case. If you cannot afford to spend the money to hire a squad of professionals, then be prepared to roll up your sleeves and devote a SIGNIFICANT amount of your spare time 5 to your divorce case. That means for most people that their supply of discretionary time on evenings and weekends goes away for a year at the least, often longer. If you choose to proceed utterly without a lawyer representing you (and you do have that option), you should be prepared to do significant amounts of research to avoid the pitfalls that a pro se litigant can easily fall into. If you can afford to hire the best lawyer or lawyers, do not let that fool you into believing your lawyer is your butler. You still need to stay aware of and engaged in the goings on in your case. You ultimately make the big decisions in your case, and that requires your consistent attention. All of the money in the world and all the hired help in the world cannot magically change that. Have you ever seen or heard, “Good. Fast. Cheap. Pick any two”? That’s definitely true when it comes to the options you have in approaching how you manage your resources in divorce.
