Are you a churchgoer? Are you a member of a church? If so, your church may have resources available to members to help them with various legal concerns or problems. You may want to start by inquiring with your pastor or minister about it. There may be local divorce support groups that offer help with filing court documents for divorce and that you might find by searching online for them.
To search for and find (if possible) an inexpensive or pro bono lawyer, you can start by finding the address and telephone number of the state bar association or visit (don’t call—your call may never be answered, or if it is answered, it may not be answered knowledgeably) your local courthouse to ask about whether inexpensive or pro bono lawyer services are available to you. You can get these telephone numbers and addresses by entering queries such as “[your state] bar association telephone number” or “[your state] bar association address” in your Internet browser. If you do not know where the courthouse that handles divorce cases is in your city or county, it is worth calling a local divorce attorney’s office to ask for the address and telephone number of the correct courthouse.
There may also be weekly or monthly workshops that are provided free of charge to the public by the state bar to help those who either cannot afford or do not want to hire/retain an attorney to handle their divorce actions.
But did you know that you are not required to hire/retain an attorney to file for a divorce? You can file for divorce by yourself. When you speak with someone at the state bar association or at your local courthouse, ask about what DIY divorce forms and instructions may be available to you as well. And if you cannot find free divorce forms available online through the state bar or the courts system for your jurisdiction, there are almost certainly DIY forms (of varying degrees of user friendliness and quality) for your jurisdiction available to you online for a price. This is often the least appealing option, but if you have no others, you should know about it.
