What is Your Best Negotiating Trick?

Once I realized that “negotiating trick” is just a synonym for “manipulation,” at best and “fraud” at worst, I stopped employing such tricks in negotiations. You wouldn’t want to be manipulated, lied to, and taken advantage of in negotiating with someone, so why would you manipulate and lie to others in negotiating with them?

If that’s not reason enough: what goes around comes around.

If that’s not reason enough: you’ll do a lot more profitable business when you’re known for being honest and fair as opposed to being known as a person no one can trust.

There are worthwhile, principled negotiation policies and practices that make negotiation more productive and that are worth learning (a great example of this and one of my favorite books on negotiation is “Start with No”), but “tricks” are for shysters.
