Do I Have to Do What My Divorce Lawyer Tells Me to Do? By Braxton Mounteer, Legal Assistant

Your divorce lawyer will tell you about the things you need to do in your case, the documents and other evidence you need to produce, the questions you need to answer, and deadlines you have to meet, even the ways you need to behave while the case is pending.

Do you have to march in lockstep with what your lawyer commands or demands of you?

No, but it should come as no surprise that if you fail to produce documents and other evidence you need to produce, fail to answer the questions you need to answer (completely and honestly), and fail to meet deadlines, and don’t behave the way you need to behave while the case is pending, the consequences are yours to bear.

You are free to make your own decisions, but not free to choose the consequences of your decisions.

You pay your lawyer to advise and advocate for you during your divorce case. Why on earth would you make his/her job any harder and make your case any more difficult, unsuccessful, and expensive than need be?

Your lawyer isn’t there to run cover for your bad acts and decisions. Your best case derives from you doing your best and being your best.
