Are You Prolonging Your Divorce? By Braxton Mounteer, Legal Assistant

Almost all people going through a divorce say they want the case disposed of as soon as possible, but I have found that most people slow the process down for a few common reasons. Such as:
· not returning their lawyers’ phone calls and emails;
· not providing the documents that their lawyers need and request;
· not telling the truth about relevant matters;
· not reviewing a completed document in a timely manner;
· not filling out a form properly (or completely), which is usually the result of not reading it fully; and
· not asking or answering important questions until the last moment (if at all).

In fairness, sometimes a case bogs down because the opposing party (and his/her attorney, if the opposing party is represented by legal counsel) is vindictive and benefits from (and/or rejoices in) wasting time and money and causing the other party anxiety, distress, and frustration.

But if you are guilty of any of the things identified in the list I provided above, you are likely the monkey wrench in your own machine. By fully cooperating with your attorney, you can keep the divorce process moving as expeditiously as it realistically can. The savings of time, money, effort, and the peace of mind that comes from being fully engaged in your case is worth it.
